چکیده

In 2008, 1330,000 cases of gonorrhea were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The actual number of infections per year is thought to be much higher because of underdetection and underreporting [1]. Neisseria gonorrhoeae can cause cervicitis, urethritis, proctitis, pelvic inflammatory disease with long-term sequelae (eg, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain), adverse outcomes of pregnancy, and increased susceptibility to and facilitated transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. An essential element in gonorrhea control is the availability and provision of effective antimicrobial therapy. Effective treatment not only eradicates infection in the affected individual and prevents the development of complications, it also has an important public health benefit by shortening the duration of infection, thus decreasing transmission and eliminating reservoirs of infection. However, gonorrhea treatment has been complicated by the development of resistance to multiple classes of antimicrobials over the past 60 years [2].

Prevalence and incidence of pharyngeal gonorrhea in a longitudinal sample of men who have sex with men: the EXPLORE study.

BACKGROUND The prevalence of gonorrhea of the pharynx among select samples of men who have sex with men (MSM) ranges from 9% to 15%. To our knowledge, there have been no longitudinal studies in a prospective MSM cohort to estimate pharyngeal gonorrhea incidence or predictors of infection. We examined the prevalence, incidence, and sociodemographic and behavioral predictors of pharyngeal gonorrh...

Increased sensitivity of DNA amplification testing for the detection of pharyngeal gonorrhea in men who have sex with men.

We compared ligase chain reaction (LCR) assay with standard culture for the detection of pharyngeal Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection in men who have sex with men (MSM) presenting at a sexually transmitted diseases clinic in San Francisco. Pharyngeal specimens were obtained from 200 MSM who reported performing fellatio during the previous 2 weeks. Confirmatory testing of discrepant specimens was ...

Sentinel surveillance for pharyngeal chlamydia and gonorrhea among men who have sex with men--San Francisco, 2010.

BACKGROUND Although a potentially important route for transmission, limited data exist on the burden of pharyngeal chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (GC) among men who have sex with men (MSM). We examined pharyngeal CT and GC among MSM screened in San Francisco in 2010. METHODS MSM seeking services in a variety of clinical settings provided clinician-collected pharyngeal specimens that were tested...

Extragenital Infections Caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae: A Review of the Literature

In the United States, sexually transmitted diseases due to Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae continue to be a major public health burden. Screening of extragenital sites including the oropharynx and rectum is an emerging practice based on recent studies highlighting the prevalence of infection at these sites. We reviewed studies reporting the prevalence of extragenital infections ...
